(Download Planes Movie) Just before the screening of Planes an announcer mentioned that a sequel is already in the works. “A sequel?” my young daughter, sitting next to me, whispered. “What if this one stinks?”

(Download Planes Movie) It was a good question, but apparently the answer doesn’t matter to Disney. This movie does stink, and the sequel is coming anyway. There is always an audience for movies targeted at small children, and perhaps the quality of the material is secondary to butts in seats and new Disney merchandise. Most parents could tell you that the average child will happily eat junk food given the opportunity. Their viewing tastes are often equally undiscriminating. But just as children deserve better than a diet of junk food, they deserve better than junk films. And make no mistake about it: Planes is a junk film.

(Download Planes Movie) Cars was a weak Pixar film and Cars 2 was significantly worse. This newest Disney movie, Planes, is not a Pixar film (it’s a Disneytoons production) but it’s set in “the world of Cars”. The hero is a crop duster named Dusty Crophopper (perhaps a bit more effort could have gone into that name), voiced by Dane Cook. Not content with his lot in life, Dusty dreams of winning an around-the-world air race. He slowly gains the support of friends, including his trusty mechanic/forklift, Dottie (Terrie Hatcher), a slow witted fuel truck, Chug (Brad Garrett), and a crusty retired fighter plane, Skipper (Stacy Keach), who becomes Dusty’s mentor.

Similarities to the characters in Cars are impossible to miss. Even the villain of the film, the arrogant green champion Ripslinger, is derivative of Chick Hicks, the antagonist in Cars. The philosophy behind Planes seems to be something like this: “Kids liked Cars? We’ll give them the exact same movie, except with planes.” The end. It’s uninspired film making, and the scent of its origin as a “direct to dvd” project still lingers.

(Download Planes Movie) What’s more, “the world of Cars” is starting to seem strained and confounding. There are no people on this planet earth, only sentient machines, but everything seems shaped by humanity. What are those large passengers planes for, exactly? Are they full of appliances on vacation? Why does the world seem designed for us, when it’s occupied by nothing but machinery?

(Download Planes Movie) And then there are the planes themselves. The global race that Dusty enters has participants from around the world. How does a children’s film create a Mexican plane character? By using the laziest, broadest stereotype, of course! So “El Chupacabra” (Carlos Alazraqui) wears a luchador mask, watches telenovelas and performs with a mariachi band. The exotic Indian plane, Ashani (Priyanka Chopra), is followed by bashful forklifts wearing saris, and the plane from the U.K. is voiced by John Cleese, naturally, and given lines like, “Of course I’m not crying. I’m British.” A lot of attention has been given to the cultural cliches in another recent children’s movie, Turbo, but that film’s insensitivity has nothing on Planes.

The radical rebuild that enables Dusty to triumph raises other concerns. If these planes are supposed to represent us – and they’re certainly anthropomorphized – then Dusty’s parts being replaced nearly top to bottom sends confusing messages about self-acceptance.

(Download Planes Movie) There’s really not much positive to say about this movie. The animation is only average, the storyline is predictable and the humor is hackneyed – especially the endless puns (Dusty is told to “lugnut up”; a Naval carrier is named the “Dwight D. Flysenhower”, etc., ad nauseum). Unlike many recent animated films, Planes is clearly aimed at children with little attempt to entertain adults, aside from referencing movies from Top Gun (especially through voice casting Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer) to It’s a Wonderful Life.

(Download Planes Movie) However. As the credits rolled on Planes I asked my daughter what she thought of the movie. She liked it, and I can’t say that I’m surprised. Most children love a night out at the movies, enjoy animation, think the 3D glasses are cool. They’ll recognize the movies characters in the toy aisles and keep generating revenue for Disney as they stockpile Dusty figures and plushes and pajamas. Kids will enjoy the junk food movie that is Planes, but I think they deserve better.
