Alomgir Ali on the Khawarij

The Khawaarij and the neo-Khawaarij do not kill people who they consider to be Muslim, since they excommunicate them from the religion. Thus, they are quick to dismiss the claim that they have the trademark quality of the Khawaarij, which is that they kill the believers and leave the disbelievers.

It's ironic that the Khawaarij were described as being people of extreme religiosity yet when it comes to the matter of the sacredness of life, which is one of the most important matters in our religion, they are the most reckless and negligent. One of the hallmarks of deviation is that deviants fall into what they try to escape from and that is clearly evident in the case of the Neo-Khawaarij; they rally behind the call to establish the hukm of Allah but they are from the most quickest to violate it and not understand its intended meanings.
