Jordan Matthews, 49ers reportedly agree to contract

After rejoining the Eagles last season thanks to a wide receiver room decimated by injury, Jordan Matthews will once again move on in 2019 as he’s reportedly signed with the San Francisco 49ers.

Matthews played 14 games for the Eagles in 2018, recording 20 catches for 300 yards and two touchdowns, and made just one catch in the postseason for Philadelphia for 37 yards — it was, however, for a touchdown against the Saints.

Head coach Doug Pederson said that Matthews’ ability to jump right in and already be familiar with the playbook and locker room went a long way in helping the 2018 team.

Matthews was not on an active roster to start the regular season after bouncing around the league a bit from 2017 to 2018. The Eagles traded him to Buffalo just ahead of the 2017 season, where he went on to claim 25 catches for 282 yards and just one touchdown before being placed on IR in December.

Perhaps the most notable thing from his time with the Bills, was him explaining the lack of things to do in Buffalo:

The Patriots ended up signing him to a one-year deal worth $1 million ($170,00 guaranteed) in April 2018, but cut him early in the preseason, setting Matthews up for his return to Philadelphia.

...

BLG NOTE: JMatt was a nice in-season pickup for the Eagles last year. Depending on his contract details, him signing with San Fran will potentially help Philly earn a compensatory pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Eagles are currently projected to receive the following comp picks: a third-round selection (for Nick Foles), a fourth-round selection (for Golden Tate), and another fourth-round selection (for Jordan Hicks). Matthews signing with the 49ers could make the Eagles’ signing of L.J. Fort cancel out with him instead of with Hicks. In simple terms, JMatt moving on helps the Eagles. It didn’t really make sense to keep him because he’d have been a fourth receiver at best (behind Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson, and Nelson Agholor) and he doesn’t contribute on special teams. Also, JMatt expressed desire for a bigger role after the 2018 season.
