I was wondering how the term "dongle" came about, so I checked everyone's trusty friend Wikipedia - turns out it dates back to the late 1600s, when Aztec shamans used wads of moss and fruit rinds to plug up holes in their sacrificial monkeys prior to religious ceremonies. But then, Wikipedia isn't always 100% accurate...
Seriously, Wikipedia's entry on dongle explains how it was first used to describe copy protection hardware plug-ins, and dates back as far as 1980. These days it's a more generic term for any small, self-contained device that plugs into a computer (usually through USB) to do a job.
It also sounds just slightly cheeky, if you ask me.
But regardless, today's Thingy (a Dongle Thingy? hmm...) is a very serious piece of hardware. This just may be the Ultimate USB WiFi Adapter!
Why, you may ask? Well, it's got your basic 802.11b, just like nanna used to use. And it also offers 802.11g, important in these busy modern times. But it's not done yet! 802.11n, folks, yes you heard me right...
For the nontechnical, "802.11" just means WiFi, and the higher the letter after it means higher speeds, greater range, and just generally more betterness! Version "n" is the latest'n'greatest. It may be so advanced your WiFi router at home or work doesn't even support it yet, but you'll be ready when they catch up!
So why are we selling it so cheap? According to Wikipedia, "Between July 1927 and March 1928 the New South Wales Waratahs, the top Australian representative rugby union side of the time, conducted a world tour encompassing Ceylon, Britain, France and Canada on which they played five Tests and twenty-six minor tour matches." (does that answer your question?)
Better grab yours now, they won't be here tomorrow!
